What Is an OCEV?

 

 

 

Under California Bill No. 1271, some electric vehicles do not qualify as legal e-bikes and are classified as Out of Class Electric Vehicles (OCEVs). These include:

 

 

• Vehicles designed or modifiable to exceed 20 mph on motor power alone or go beyond 750 watts of motor output.
• Standard e-bikes that have been modified after purchase to go faster or use more power than legally allowed.

⚠️ These vehicles do not meet the legal definition of an e-bike and may require different licensing, registration, or safety gear.
